Passing of Illegal Migration Bill is a “new and shocking low” for UK asylum system

18th July 2023

Yesterday (17 July), the Illegal Migration Bill passed its final vote in the Lords, clearing the way for it to pass into law.

Responding, Rose Caldwell, Chief Executive of Plan International UK, said:

“This draconian law represents a new and shocking low for the UK asylum system. It strips away protections for people seeking safety in the UK, removing their right to claim asylum, penalising victims of modern slavery, and making no provision for the creation of safe routes. The Government now risks breaching multiple human rights treaties and failing in its responsibilities under international law.

“The impact this Bill is likely to have on children, girls and young women is unthinkable. Many of the children coming to our shores are already coping with severe trauma, but instead of receiving the care and compassion they desperately need, they will be sent to detention centres – frightened and failed by a system they do not understand.

“We will oppose this appalling decision at every opportunity. In coalition with other civil-society organisations, we stand in solidarity with all those affected by the Bill and urge its reversal as soon as possible. As the climate emergency and conflicts around the world drive growing numbers of refugees, we will continue to call for a fairer and more dignified approach to asylum and migration – one that treats all people with compassion and respect and recognises the needs and vulnerabilities of children."

About Plan International UK

Plan International UK is a global children’s charity. We work to give every child the same chance in life.

In every child there’s a spark of imagination, curiosity and ambition. But not every child is born with the same opportunities.

When you face poverty or violence the odds are stacked against you. When you’re a girl it’s even harder to be safe, in school and in charge of your body.

All children deserve an education, health care and clean water. All children deserve the chance to thrive.

We’re fighting so every child, especially every girl, knows their value. We’re fighting so the communities they’re growing up in – and the world around them – value them too.

And if disaster strikes we’re there to protect children, keep them learning and help them recover.
